Music Review: Dave Griffiths “Here & Now”
Music in the church has always been shaped by the culture and theology of the times. Whether it be King David, who advocated violence and warfare in his praise, or Calvinism, whose atonement theology worked it’s way into the worship vernacular, through to the Jesus Movement with it’s songs of rapture and escape, the music of the church is a mirror by which we often can see ourselves.
With that in mind, Dave Griffiths new CD album Here & Now is a wonderful reflection of where the church of the 21st century both is, and is heading. Listening to the album I was struck by the personal journey Griffiths was on as he penned the lyrics and realised this is a songwriter who is discovering new layers in his relationship with God and has, fortunately, invited us along for the ride. Even the name Here & Now, with it’s focus on the present, contrasts with current contemporary worship music’s emphasis on ‘someday, in eternity‘.
Another welcome contrast is Griffith’s honesty as he deals with fear and doubt in his walk with God. Songs like Abide show the singer / songwriter wrestling, like Jacob of old, with the Creator of the Universe himself…and being blessed by the encounter:
This is what it means to abide
Finding You inside
Inside my pain and my confusion
Inside my fear
Inside my doubt
Inside my darkness
Inside my humanity
Other tracks, such as upbeat Son or the soulful Union testify to the acceptance and grace extended without condition to all humanity as well as the reminder that nothing can separate us from the love we have been shown in Christ Jesus.
Here & Now also pauses for a beautiful detour with 10 Years; a delightful love song Griffiths penned to his wife which will resonate in the heart of any couple that have spent significant time together.
With Here & Now Dave Griffiths has given faith based music a theological voice for a new movement growing within the body of Christ. A movement that is more honest, reflective, and understanding of the extent a loving father will go to enjoy life with his children.
